  1. Idea 1: Battle of the Bands

I would hold this in Maggie Mays which is a Scottish Traditional bar along Argyll Street making it easy for people to attend and to support local bands. It would be preferred to hold this near the end of the week, most likely a Thursday as it is a popular night for people to head out on and it won't be on too late anyway, the event would be held about 8pm – 11pm. There is no dress code people should attend in their own comfy clothes. It would be intended that around 5 bands would play on the night all having a slot of around half an hour each, depending on how long their songs last this may be slightly less or more. There would be judges arranged and would need about 3 to come to a mutual and fair decision, once the winner is announced there would be prizes for 1st 2nd and 3rd which would come from money fundraised or gifts in kind from people who support upcoming artists. Maggie Mays has its own traditional Scottish theme around it including decorations therefore not much decoration would be needed, just added affect from the stage light. There would be a selection of drink available from the bar with ID having to be shown and also bar food available for those playing and those attending and watching, this will be at original prices.

Battle of the bands is a really good idea, as it is not something that is done very often. You haven’t really specified who your target audience is, although this is something that will appeal to all ages, you haven’t really said much apart from the fact that ID will be required. For this type of event I would say your target audience can range from the student age of 18 till about 40. It is good that you are hosting the event at a reasonable time, especially as it is on a Thursday night and many people will still have Uni/Work/College on the Friday. Maggie Mays is a really suitable venue, you should also consider looking at Ivory Blacks, which is a really good venue for music event’s and they like to help out local talent as much as they can, there is also seating here and a bar, so people won’t have to stand the whole night. Another venue you could consider is Classic Grand, this is still close to the City Centre as well as only being a short walk from the train station. And just like ivory blacks, they like to represent local talent.

    2. I really like this idea! It's a good event to hold as music events are always popular but Battle of the Bands is not very common and the way you have it set up is really good. I think this will appeal to a lot of people.
The venue is really good and i think would work really well in theme with your event.
Its really well thought through and very well organized. You might potentially need another venue just in case your chosen one becomes unavailable or doesn't suit: if you sell more tickets or need more space than expected.
A potential venue could be The Stairway Club which is right next to Central Station and already has a built in stage that you could use.
I would agree with a Thursday night to hold it on as Glasgow is generally busy then. Would it be ticketed for the audience or band supporters?
Really clear and well thought through! I love it

  2. Idea 2: Quiz Night

I would hold a quiz night as it is a good way to get a group of friends or families together and have fun and it would be cheap, only costing £2.50 per head to take part which would go to charity. I would hold this in The Ark which is situated on Frederick St, which is in the city centre near George Square allowing it easy access for people to attend this event. This is a suitable venue also as it is a proper pub other than a club and has plenty of seats and tables for everyone and has held quiz nights before for groups of people. It would be good if people dressed up as a specific group of people/thing for the team they are in, for example all going as different characters from a show. This would be held on a Sunday night as it is most likely a night where attendees would not have anything on that night and would be from 7pm till 9pm therefore not a late night either. There would be a main speaker organised which would ask the questions and be the quizzer, the questions ask will be general questions and not on a specific topic. There will be a prize for 1st and 2nd prize which would be decided near the time. There would be bar drinks and bar food available for those taking part at the original prices and those attending must be over 18 to be in the bar. There will also be activities during the interval such as eating and drinking challenges which The Ark have done before and this will cost money to take part in too to help raise more money for charity.

  3. Idea 1: College Challenge

This would be a college version of University Challenge. It could be held over a few hours and different teams would compete against each other for a place in the Final for the leading two teams.
The teams could either be 4 people from a class or just 4 people from around the college.
The event could be held in a venue such as the Arches as it is a big space, but is also unique and makes the event a bit more interesting, they are also licensed to serve alcohol so participants and the audience can have a drink if they want.
The event would cost £5 to enter as a team and there would be a prize for the winning team.
There would be a Quiz Master, who would be in charge of asking all the questions and who would also be the host for the evening.
There would be drinks and canapes/nibbles available to the teams and the audience (if there is an audience)
The questions would be based on different subjects and there would be 5 questions per subject.
The money taken for entry would go towards paying for the venue and for the drinks and food.

  4. Master chef

This Event would target students, more likely the hospitality students of city of Glasgow college. It would be hosted in city of Glasgow college, most likely during the day or whenever the kitchens are free to use. Depending on the numbers we would take as many people as the kitchen can hold, we would either have people making the same meal to see who can do it better or have people be creative and make there own meal. We would get a celebrity or even just a normal chef in to judge all the entry's, people would pay to take part for a chance to win a prize and perhaps a trophy, if this event in successful this can be a annual thing to do for the college as master chef has never been done in the college before. Ingredients will be supplied by our group and whatever the college can offer, cooking shows now a days are a modern trend so we feel a lot of people would be interested in the idea, especially since we share a college with hospitality students

This is a great idea as it will inspire the students to use the flare they have for cooking and gives them a chance to be creative. Having a chef to judge the competition is a good idea because any student who impresses them may find themselves being head hunted for a job. As far as another potential venue is concerned I think the college kitchens are the perfect place to host the event. the target market for this event would be anyone studying in the hospitality sector of the college and I agree that cooking shows a popular trend at the moment so this will entice students and lecturers to attend.

I think this is a great idea for an event as it encourages students to be as innovative as possible with the food they cook and the way in which it is presented. I think it would be best to get a chef in to judge the students rather than a celebrity as a chef would be more relevant as the students targeted for the event most likely inspire to be a chef one day, however if you could get a celebrity chef that would be ideal. I think the college kitchens is with no doubt the perfect place to hold the event as it would not cost any money and students wouldn’t need to travel far. The target market for the event of hospitality students is fitting however I don’t think there would be any harm opening the event up to other student who studies different courses as there is a high possibility they also like cooking as at the moment cooking is a popular thing to do.

  5. Reply to Ninas College challenge

I think this is a good idea for an event, Nina. I think it would be exciting and it sounds fun. I think the Arches is an appropriate venue as it is central Glasgow and very spacious. The only con I have about this event is that the arches may make it over 18 if alcohol was being served. You haven’t added the target audience but I think it should be an over 18 event due to the alcohol and they perhaps have more knowledge than say 16 year olds. Overall I think this is a good idea and think it could be successful.

  6. Idea 2: The Great College Bake-Off
Using The Great British Bake-Off as a model, create a baking competition for college students.
Keep all the basic ideas the same as the show, have to create a basic bake, with a unique twist.
The entrants would have to pay to participate, not sure of exact amount, and this money would pay for the ingredients needed for the baking.
Using the college kitchens for the Bake-Off, and try to get a celebrity/well known chef to judge each dish.
We would hold the event over a few hours so the participants would be able to do at least 2 simple bakes.
This event is an opportunity for cookery students to showcase their skills.

  7. Reply to Nina Brand Idea 1: College Challenge

I like your event idea, it is a fun original event that involves college students participation. The Arches is a unique venue and is an easy location for guests to get to as it is very close to central station. The Arches is a very popular venue, so you may need to have an alternative venue if it becomes fully booked. A venue with theatre style (such as the Royal concert hall) is a possibility if there is going to be an audience. I think the target audience for the event should be 18 and over if the venue is selling alcohol. The light snacks are a good idea for the participants and the audience to have throughout the event.

  8. Idea 2: Painting for primary kids

first of all we would get a venue that can hold several children, Age range of 5-10, venues such as SECC or even the arches, or depending on our budget the city of glasgow college. We would contact all the primary school in glasgow about the event, giving them the details like what would be at the event, such as painting, face painting, tuck shops or food & drink can be supplied and maybe a few games. We would try and get it between school times and in school term. Tickets wont cost much, if a school would be coming we could just charge the school at a whole, the event isnt about making a profit so we would only charge the bare minimum that is required. The paint used will be washable and not dangerous to the kids, to make it more interesting for the kids we can give out small prizes to kids that have done something/painted something good or interesting, to add to the event we would try and get someone who would volunteer to do a comedy show/puppet show at some point, this part of the event would only happen if we can get someone to do it for free, or at a low cost.

  9. Event 1-celebrity mask-erade

This would be a party night for students. The money raised from the event would pay for event and reminder to a local Glasgow charity.
My preferred venue would be the arches.

Ticket only event – makes the event exclusive . once a ticket is purchased you will receive a golden envelope similar to an award ceremony envelope “and the winner is …………..” with a celebrity mask for the evening these would be made up prior girl/boy piles and a random envelope would be issued also that means the ticket holder can be the person to reveal their true identity if they wish .
Ticket price to be decided depending on price and market research.
Also numbers would have to accounted for depending on venue.

The event – fun vibrant city evening event I think with social media and college website, radio advertising could cause a buzz about campus.

Entrance – new York taxi photo-booth with additional dress up box

Various arches would be separated chill out lounge, cocktail and food area I thought buffet style but would also work well banquet style but this would depend on target markets disposable income and final arch dancefloor with a dj or band again depending on survey outcome and what the potential customer wants.
The arches has lighting and sound systems set up to make the most of the venue in-house they also have caterers and bars where a tailored celeb cocktail menu could be set up .

A raffle could be set up to raise funds with donated prizes from local companies in response there name advertised on event face-book or website.

Event 2- Avant-Garde fashion hair show

I would like to organise a fashion hair show to showcase college hairdressing students work.

I would contact all first year classes and ask them to elect a suitable candidate from each class.
    Models could be other classmates.
Photography students could involved as well as make up and fashion students to show off their work and add to their portfolios
Tickets sales would be classmates supporting their elected representative.

They would create an Avant-Garde hairstyle and styling and a few top Glasgow hairdressers would ideally judge this event.
A theme could be added for example colour or season and the event could be themed around it
Perhaps spring if the event was march

    Venue – lighthouse Mitchell lane
Very arty and creative city centre venue and rather than a catwalk to show off final look use the escalator that runs straight through the venue maybe a judge on each level. Also plenty of room for attendees to view as well.
Reception style buffet and champagne reception.
Excellent photo backdrop for portfolio with the 360 degree view of Glasgow also maybe a chance to get media/newspaper interest
Ask glass department at city of Glasgow to make a winners award.

Again check out my pinterest Avant -Garde board

This is my second idea , please give me feedback !

  10. REPLY TO CLAIRE RILEY'S IDEA 1

I really like the sound of this idea
    Pros:
    • The day and time is I feel is ideal as Thursday in Glasgow is student night and after your event they will still make it out to the clubs in Glasgow.
    • I also like the idea of Maggie Mays gaining revenue from your event which may encourage them to offer you the venue for a cheap price or event for FREE
    Cons:
    • You haven’t mentioned how you will go about choosing he bands.
    • You also have not mentioned if you are going to make this a free event or a ticketed event, and if ticketed how many tickets you will need to sell to break-even/make a profit.
    Venue Suggestions:
I would suggest the following two venues to also consider with the event:
    • The O2 ABC2 Glasgow – although no food is provided there is drink provided both alcoholic and non-alcoholic
    • The Garage 2
    Target Audience:
You haven’t suggested an age rage …. However I would suggest 14+ because you tend to get more people come along when its 14+ rather then 18+, however this is talking from past experience of attending a few over the past 5 years.

I think that this is a great idea! It will bring all the students and lecturers together and in turn, raise money for charity.
Having the event in the Arches is a good idea as it means that it is within easy traveling distance. Having the fee of £5 to put in a team for the challenge is another good idea as it means that it is affordable for everyone.
However, I would target the event to over 18 students depending on the final venue choice as the venue might only allow in over 18's. Another possible venue could be The City Halls as it is a large enough space to hold the amount of people who will attend.

  15. Reply to Clare's Battle of the Bands

Really loved your idea Clare as it is a great opportunity for the younger and older generation artists to show off there talents. I feel this event could be open to anyone who is interested in music.

I also like the fact that you do not need to decorate and supply food and beverage therefore your over heads will be quite low in that aspect. Although I feel it would be hard to get people to come to the event and perform/judge without being paid or else the money raised will be donated to a good cause. Also Maggie May's is a popular venue therefore you may need to look for other venues incase it is booked for when you want to hold your event. I think an appropriate venue would be Strathclyde University Union as there is also food and beverage sold and it would attract a lot of students.

Overall I feel this is a really good idea as it is an event which is very popular within the younger generation and I think there would be a lot of people who would attend. A great place to advertise would be Glasgow Colleges and Universities in order to generate interest.
